SIF recognises lifesaving actions of members Wayne Brennan and Hassan Isman

The Security Industry Federation (SIF) has formally recognised the outstanding actions of two members, Wayne Brennan and Hassan Isman, whose intervention ensured a colleague received urgent medical care while on duty.

Both Wayne and Hassan, who serve as security officers on a major infrastructure project, demonstrated calm, decisive professionalism when a colleague reported symptoms that could indicate a serious medical issue. Their actions follow a previous incident in December 2024, when Wayne saved another colleague’s life after they collapsed and stopped breathing.

Despite the absence of formal recognition from their employer, the SIF has moved to honour both members for their conduct and duty of care.

On 27 November 2025, during the evening shift, a colleague approached Wayne and reported pain in his left arm and neck. Wayne immediately carried out basic welfare checks, asking about chest pain and pins and needles, and advised his colleague to notify the Site Operations Centre (SOC) without delay.

As Wayne and Hassan left the site, both remained concerned about their colleagues condition. Rather than simply moving on to their next task, they pulled over to contact SOC directly, reporting the symptoms and asking for guidance. SOC shared their concerns and instructed them to return to reassess their colleague.

On returning, Wayne and Hassan reassessed the condition. Based on Wayne’s professional judgement, he made the critical decision to call 999, remaining with his colleague and supporting him while an interpreter-assisted call handler escalated the case as a priority.

When the ambulance arrived, Wayne and Hassan briefed the attending crew, providing a clear timeline, list of symptoms, and their observations. During the assessment, the colleague disclosed that he had experienced chest pains the previous day, which further heightened the paramedics’ concern resulting in the ambulance crew confirming they would be would be transporting the patient to hospital for further assessment.

A track record of looking after colleagues

This is not the first time Wayne has stepped up in a medical emergency. In December 2024, he saved a colleague’s life after they collapsed and were not breathing, taking swift and appropriate action under extreme pressure.

Together, these incidents highlight not just one-off bravery, but a consistent pattern of care, leadership, and professionalism. Wayne and Hassan’s actions are a reminder that security workers don’t just protect property and assets, they protect people, including their own colleagues.

Recognition from the SIF

In recognition of their actions, SIF General Secretary, Daniel Garnham, has issued a formal letter of appreciation to Wayne and Hassan. They have each received:

A Letter of Appreciation from the General Secretary

A Certificate of Recognition from the Security Industry Federation

A free 12-month subscription to the Protect Card, the discount and rewards service for security professionals

The Protect Card subscription is a small but meaningful way to acknowledge that when security workers go above and beyond, their union sees it, values it, and responds.

Daniel Garnham said:

“Wayne and Hassan did exactly what we expect from the very best in our industry, they saw something that wasn’t right, they refused to walk away, and they made sure their colleague got the help he needed.

Too often, security workers quietly save the day with no recognition at all. The SIF will never take that for granted. Wayne and Hassan’s actions reflect the highest standards of our profession and the values of this union.”

We are proud to count Wayne Brennan and Hassan Isman among our membership, and we thank them for their actions in safeguarding a colleague when it mattered most.

If you are a security worker who has gone above and beyond, or if you feel your efforts are not recognised or respected at work, you are not alone. The SIF is here to support you.

"Amazing union that offers benefits you can actually use. After a traumatic time causing me to take some time off work for mental health reasons, I was able to access the 'in person counselling' they offer, something quite unique as usually companies only offer the 'over the phone' or 'virtual' types. This helped me so much that 4 months later, I am back on my feet and in a great place! Thank you SIF!!"

"I've been a member since April 2025, with the way things were going I thought I needed someone to look after my employment issues and interests if any cropped up, long story short, an issue popped up with the renewing of my SIA licence which left me extremely concerned, I wrote to Daniel asking for help and advice, with 5 minutes I received a reply somewhat calming my nerves and that he had written to the SIA, within 48 hours my licence was renewed thanks to the SIF and Daniel Garnham , extremely pleased with my outcome. If you work in the industry trust me at some point your going to need help, I can now sleep easy"
