We know that many SIF members have expressed concerns and scepticism about the Security Industry Authority (SIA) in the past, particularly around their handling of labour exploitation and enforcement. However, the recent nationwide operation, Operation EMPOWER, seems to reflect a shift in the SIA’s approach, indicating that they may finally be acknowledging the long-standing issues raised by workers and industry representatives alike.
This operation, conducted with support from HMRC and Home Office Immigration Enforcement, targeted illegal working practices across 35 UK locations, focusing on issues such as underpayment, fraudulent employment status, and breaches of the National Minimum Wage(Security Matters Magazine).
While we acknowledge that trust in the SIA may take time to rebuild, this coordinated effort suggests they are listening more attentively to industry concerns. The focus on protecting legitimate businesses and tackling exploitation is a positive development, particularly for those workers who have long been affected by unfair practices.
For SIF members, this marks a potentially significant turning point. If the SIA continues to prioritise enforcement and regulation in this manner, it could lead to more secure, fair, and transparent working conditions across the security sector.
As always, we will be closely monitoring their actions to ensure these efforts truly benefit our members and promote a safer, more equitable industry.
